The Val di Suga, a winery situated to the north of Montalcino, began making wine in the early 1980s. A wine called Vigna del Lago was first made in 1983 from a northeast-facing vineyard beside the lake opposite the winery. In 1988 the winery purchased a particularly well-situated site called Spuntali southwest of town and this was followed in 1999 with the acquisition of the Poggio al Granchio vineyard, which is in the southeast. The varied exposition of these three sites around the town gives Val di Suga vineyards with three different aspects, allowing for a blended Brunello which is made up of fruit from the three distinct localities. In addition to the blended Brunello and the three individual crus, a Rosso is made and also a Riserva.  The estate totals 55 hectares under vine.

Fermentations are long – with about 20 days post fermentation maceration on the skins. Aging of the Brunellos is in large French oak barrels for 24 months, followed by six months in concrete vats.

A rich magenta hue the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggio Al Granchio is a serious wine that amplifies things further and will need some decanting if opening now. Forward with great aromas of graphite black cherry liqueur cracked pepper sage and porcini it?s full-bodied yet weightless on the palate and has phenomenal concentration while remaining elegant all the way through it offers plush velvety tannins and mineral undercurrents while retaining wonderful purity and a seamless texture. This stunning wine deserves several years in cellar. Drink 2026-2046.

Wine Spectator: 96 Points

A deep well of blackberry black currant and cherry fruit marks this succulent red with accents of wild rosemary and mineral. Well-delineated and complex echoing the fruit and savory notes on the long finish. Shows superb balance and harmony. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1083 cases made 103 cases imported.

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

From a site with schistic galestro clay soils the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is definitely the most complete and complex of these new releases from 2019 by Val di Suga. Fruit comes from an 18-hectare vineyard located at 430 to 450 meters in elevation. The wine offers more oozing richness and concentration in line with the character of the vintage with sweet cherry blackberry toasted cumin seed and pressed rose. This estate does a good job of maintaining the freshness of Sangiovese. Some 12000 bottles were made. Val di Suga is part of the Angelini Wine Group and is managed by the charismatic Ettore Nicoletto a market-savvy CEO. A recent rebranding effort has changed the labels and a new distribution network has been created. This estate farms a total of 52 hectares of vines. Published: Dec 14 2023

The 2019 Val di Suga Brunello Poggio al Granchio boasts heady aromas of menthol leather juniper and violet. On the savory full-bodied palate notes of iron bitter almond and licorice accent dried cherry and bitter orange. Enveloping close-grained tannins provide support. Drink 2029?2039. Vinous: 95 Points

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its beguiling aromatics. Rose and clove aromas give way to cinnamon-dusted red currants and a lifting hint of camphor. It?s elegant in style with silken textural depths and ripe wild berry fruits that saturate all balanced by a stream of brisk acidity. Saline minerals stain the palate as the 2019 finishes long and structured. It holds its power in reserve as a pleasantly bitter tinge mingles with fine-grained tannins to create a youthfully tense sensation. This is a Poggio al Granchio for the ages. Bury your bottles deep. (Drink between 2027-2037)
