A tasting of component barrels for this wine made for an instructive view of the vintage. Certain sites show the lightness of the vintage fresh and peppery. Others such as Bonnivières and Tartaras exhibited the rigid austere tannins that are quite common in 2021. Few barrels had great concentration or generosity of fruit; this is a vintage about structure and minerality rather than concentration or fruit sweetness. I would be inclined to leave this for a substantial amount of time before broaching around 2031 by which time it should show good complexity and terroir expression and may well be worthy of a higher score. All whole-bunch fermented and matured mostly in old demi-muids. (Drink between 2031-2041)
Jeb Dunnuck: 92-94 Points
As usual I was able to taste through multiple parcels destined for the 2021 Côte Rôtie. All of the samples show solid classic aromatics more medium-bodied profiles and soft relatively tame tannins and this will clearly will be a more mid-weight yet balanced charming Côte Rôtie from this estate that will be loved by the Jamet lovers out there. Jean-Paul commented that he used slightly less stems in 2021 (although most lots saw upwards of 80% whole clusters) and chapitalized to raise the alcohol 1% which is common in the vintage. I suspect this will be relatively accessible in its youth given its more rounded tannins and should evolve similarly to the 2014.
dVinous: 93-95 Points
Inky magenta. Highly expressive aromas of red and blue fruits violet incense olive and baking spices along with a smoky mineral top note. Stains the palate with vibrant sharply etched black raspberry blueberry bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly deepen and become sweeter with air. Shows very good power but comes off lithe showing no rough edges on a long gently tannic finish that leaves behind sappy blue fruit and black pepper notes.

Cask samples tasted at the domaine. Sample 1: Lesardes and other parcels in the northern part of the appellation. Subtle pepper slight reduction. Very juicy. Light tannic structure bags of fresh acidity subtle saline note throughout. Good structure acidity and tension. All about the freshness.Sample 2: Bonnivières and Tartaras. Harvested last.Graphite note white pepper clove. A tighter tannin structure with a delicate but firm graphite feel. Vertical and introverted. Adds structure to the blend.Sample 3: Fongeant next to Côte Brune.Gorgeous nose with a strong smoky note. Ashy whole-bunch note with firm tannins and a gorgeous subtle floral note. The earthy graphite note lasts throughout the wine. Mineral and salty throughout.Sample 4: Fongeant and Gerine. Dried violets rose and white pepper. Rounded and elegant on the palate. Delicate detailed and very fine tannins with a subtle dark-fruit note and floral salty finish. Delicate and elegant.Sample 5: Le Plomb and Tartarus. Graphite dark fig. Tight tannins dark fruit and a dense structure. Clove and dark fruits.Sample 6: La Landonne Côte Blonde Côte Rosier Les Moutonnes and Tupin.Distinct whole-bunch smoke alongside floral aromas bonfire and rugged earthy notes. Really saline finish again. Tight tannins ? salt liquorice and very long. (AC) (Drink between 2024-2036)
